INFO
Charlie and the Bukowskies (Dutch title: Naar Bukowski) is an 80’s theater gig with electronic music and cello. A fictitious tribute band plays their songs (and scenes as if they were songs) based on the prose and poetry of the American misfit of the beat generation: Charles Bukowski. Two decades after his death, four young performers pay homage to the raw perspective of this ‘dirty old man’.
Bukowski wrote rebelliously and tormented about ordinary life and the drudgery of work, while drinking, provoking and misbehaving at the bottom of society. Distanced from the masses, alone with his typewriter, some bottles of booze and frequently a woman, he would come to his senses. With easing irony and self-mockery he described this ‘crazy’ world. Even after his death, his work and perspective on life still inspire young generations and resonate in the older ones: Don’t try! Go all the way!
“Charlie and the Bukowskies celebrates the zany fun of the man’s life through a series of songs, poetry readings, and one truly filthy sex scene that can only be described as hardcore middle-class pornography of the finest kind… An upbeat and entertaining end to a fantastic festival of new international theatre.” – The Greater Manchester Reviewer
“You’re unlikely to forget the sex scene, which perfectly highlights his attitude to life. A careful mix of serious and fun, it’s a great way to finish the festival.” – Quiet Man Dave
